Inspection of the finished screw threads can be achieved in various ways, with the expense of the method tailored to the requirements of the product application. Shop-floor inspection of a thread is often as simple as running a nut onto it or a bolt into it . This is plenty good enough for many applications (e.g., MRO or hobbyist work), although it is not good enough for most commercial manufacturing. Materials are limited to ductile materials because the threads are cold formed. However, this increases the thread’s yield strength, surface finish, hardness, and wear resistance. Also, materials with good deformation characteristics are necessary for rolling; these materials include softer metals and exclude brittle materials, such as cast iron.
Inspection of pitch diameters are performed with both full form and single element indicating type gauges that are set with thread masters. Standard outside diameter micrometers are used for inspecting major diameters, and optical comparators are used to check minor diameters and root radii. With all of these gauges available on the shop floor, a thread rolling operator can monitor the process and make adjustments quickly. Camshaft duration can be measured at most any point of lifter rise and fall. “Advertised” duration is typically the amount of crankshaft rotation recorded between .006 inch of lobe rise and .006 inch of lobe fall. Advertised duration can have different meaning for different manufacturers, however. Aftermarket manufacturers began providing duration specifications at .050- inch lobe lift so consumers could compare various cams and predict the performance effects. That particular value was selected because it’s a reference point that easily measured and it’s about the point that significant airflow begins. A camshaft opens and closes the valves at specific points during crankshaft rotation. Those values, along with a few others makeup the “timing” or “events” of a particular cam.
While many camshaft manufacturers can provide you with a quality off the- shelf or custom solid-lifter grind for Pontiac V-8, finding suitable Pontiac specific solid lifters can be much more challenging. Hydraulic lifters require a large volume of pressurized oil for proper operation, and it also supplies the pushrods with oil to lubricate the rocker arms and valvesprings. A solid lifter, on the other hand, simply passes oil from the lifter bore to the pushrod. An adjustable valvetrain is required whenever the block and/ or cylinder heads are machined moderately. A long-handle 5/8-inch wrench tightens the rocker arm adjuster nut while a 7/32-inch hex-head wrench tightens the internal set screw independently.

The flat follower requires that everywhere the surface of the cam is convex. The roller follower demands that any concave portion of the working surface must have a radius at least equal to the radius of the roller. The knife follower does not, theoretically, impose any limit on the shape of the cam. These have the advantage that the only side thrust is that due to friction between the contact surfaces of cam and follower. The relative motion is one of sliding but it may be possible to reduce this by off setting the axis of the follower as shown in the diagram. This results in the the follower revolving under the influence of the cam. In this connection it should be noticed that the cam does not, as would at first appear likely, determine the motion of the follower during the whole of the its out-stroke. Actually, owing to the inertia of the follower, it is only during the first part of the out-stroke and the latter part of the return that the motion of the follower is positively controlled by the cam.
